Thousands gather in Manteca to honor those who gave their lives for freedom
MANTECA – Every moment lived by a soldier in combat is a hectic moment, but there was one that sticks out dramatically in the mind of Airforce Lt. Col. Frank Latt.
It was Aug. 6, 2010, and Latt was flying an F-16 fighter aircraft in the Oruzgan Province, Afghanistan, equipped with 500-pound bombs. On the ground, a senior airman named Mark Forester requested a fly by as he stood in a field with a mirror and a radio trying to get Latt’s attention through smoke and gunfire.
“I asked him if he was sure … if it was clear,” Latt said at Manteca’s Not Forgotten Memorial Day event at Woodward Park. “He told me ‘I own the airspace from the Earth’s surface to the moon, and I want a fly by right now.’ ”
